09 Jul Get to Know Your Antioxidants
What Are Antioxidants?
Antioxidants first came to widespread attention after a scientific discovery was made on the effect of antioxidants on chronic conditions in the 90s [1].
Antioxidants are substances that protect our body against free radical and unstable molecules that cause damage to the cells and DNA.
Free radicals are “waste materials” produced naturally from cell metabolism, exercise and stress. Exposure to cigarette smoke, sunlight (UV rays) and air pollution among other environmental factors also contribute to the formation of free radicals. [2] Their instability is caused by an unpaired electron, which leads to a process called oxidation where they “steal” an electron from other healthy molecules. This snowballs into a vicious chain reaction, causing more healthy molecules to turn into free radicals. The body eventually experiences oxidative stress when free radicals escalate out of proportion. Oxidative stress is linked to various illnesses including cancer, chronic and age-related conditions [3].
Antioxidant vitamins counteract this chemical reaction by donating an electron to neutralize the free radicals. They also play a key role in DNA repair mechanisms and maintaining cell longevity.
Yes, you read right. Antioxidant vitamins slow down ageing!
Natural Sources Of Antioxidants Vitamins
Some examples of antioxidant vitamins are Vitamin C, E and beta-carotene. Besides oranges that are commonly cited as sources of vitamin C, there are many other fruits packed with immense antioxidants for the skin.
Berries
Blueberries, Cranberries, Strawberries, Raspberries… Berries and berry supplements in general are excellent sources of antioxidants. They contain high levels of anthocyanins, pigments that exert antioxidant properties and give their red-purple-blue colours. It is no wonder that berries are called superfruits. The more, the berrier!
Grapes
The Muscadine grape, native to the southern part of the USA, contains 40 times more antioxidants than an average grape. It is also high in resveratrol, a natural antioxidant food ingredient with anticancer properties [4] found commonly in grapes and red wine.
Tea
Sorry to coffee lovers, but tea gets the vote when it comes to antioxidant capacity. In particular, Matcha tea contains 10 times more antioxidant vitamins than green tea and 14 times that of wild berries [5]. This seems to explain why Japan, the matcha haven, has one of the world’s longest average lifespans. Purple tea, originating from Kenya, also contains high levels of antioxidant vitamins, boasting 15 times more anthocyanins than blueberries.
